Where were you when the lights went out?

The power came back on at our house this afternoon after being out for a week. Hurricane Ike blew through last Sunday afternoon with wind gusts of up to seventy-five miles an hour. CVH and I watched carefully from the leeward side of our house as power lines fell, a huge tree across the street toppled over onto the neighbor's garage, uncountable branches flew through the air, and hundreds of people just drove around and several dozen walked (with difficulty) over to see the power lines. We stared at all these people in amazement.

Fortunately we had water and a gas-piloted water heater (do they even still make those?), so we had hot water. And it was cool enough that not having air-conditioning was all that bad. Still, cooking dinner on the gas grill every night got to be a little old (the lines at the restuarants that did have power were ridiculous, and besides, we had all that stuff thawing in the deep freeze that we wanted to make the most of). CVH put up with it all until yesterday, when she freaked. We spent last night at the Super 8 in Seymour, Indiana. Seymour is a small town known for only one thing, but famously so - when John Mellencamp says "small town", Seymour is what he is referring to.

Breakfast at Cousins

We tried to get into Wild Eggs for breakfast today, the wildly popular spot, but we waited way too late to leave for the restuarant. By the time we got there, the line was far around the building, and there was no parking spot to be found.

So we went down the street to WW Cousins, a burger joint. I was a little concerned that we were just going to end up at an overpriced Wendy's, but then we saw Chef Deano, the chef from the local culinary academy and host of TV's Secrets of Louisville Chefs. I figured that if this is where Deano takes his family when they can't get into Wild Eggs, then it's probably pretty good. And it was.
